What Makes It Uncommon

What happens to a piano when its concert days are over? In the hands of Wesla Weller, it finds new life as a kalimba—a melodic thumb piano that hums with history. Each piece is carved from the reclaimed wood of beyond-repair pianos, preserving the instrument’s spirit in a new, more intimate form. Its eight steel tines invite curious fingers to pluck out calming melodies, spontaneous tunes, or meditative rhythms, creating a meaningful gift for musicians, makers, or anyone drawn to music’s power to transform—and be transformed.

  • Crafted from the salvaged wood of old spinets and other uprights.
  • Tuned to one octave in the key of C using the diatonic scale.
  • Eight steel keys produce soft, resonant tones when gently plucked.
  • A unique companion for meditation, relaxation, or musical exploration.
  • Introduces music-making to kids and adults alike.
  • Measures 4"L x 5.5"W x 1.375"H.
  • Handmade in California.

Due to the recycled nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

Wesla Weller

Wesla Weller is a Los Angeles-based artist who transforms discarded instruments into soulful, functional art. After a career in graphic design, she took a metalsmithing class that sparked a passion for working with reclaimed materials. Inspired by her love of music and a desire to honor the craftsmanship behind each instrument, she now creates kalimbas, jewelry, and kaleidoscopes from piano parts, cymbals, and woodwinds. Each piece is handmade in her backyard workshop and celebrates beauty, memory, and second chances. She donates a portion of sales to music education and piano reuse programs...and credits her dog Clifford as the shop supervisor.
