What Makes It Uncommon

All Thumbs

This petite instrument carries with it thousands of years of Zimbabwean musical tradition. Called a kalimba, mbira, mbila, or marímbula depending on the region in which it's played, the first version of this handheld thumb piano originated in Zimbabwe over 3,000 years ago. Lightweight and portable, the thumb piano was the chosen instrument of traveling troubadours, who would retell the history of their tribe in song.

Whether you use it to strike up your own story or to teach little ones about music, Paul and Sue Bergstrom's handcrafted thumb piano is the ideal instrument to carry a tune. Atop a beautiful, cedar plank are 8 numbered tines that correspond with traditional notes on the diatonic scale. The tines, or keys, are made of tempered spring steel that is hand-cut and rounded. To play, simply cradle the instrument in your hands and pluck the tines with your thumbs. This modern version is also amp-compatible, so it's ready for band play-alongs and to satisfy all your sampling needs! Handmade in Blairsville, Georgia.

Includes easy-to-follow songbook filled with traditional melodies like "You are my sunshine," "Kumbaya," and "Happy Birthday."

location

Georgia

Nothing brings Paul and Sue Bergstrom more joy than sharing their love of music. From their home and workshop in the mountains of north Georgia, the couple crafts kalimbas, a type of thumb piano that originated in Africa, out of gourds and wood. When Paul creates an instrument, he works to "feel" the sound. "Only after my wife has installed the key set and tuned it do I get to hear the end result of my work," he says.

Aesthetic beauty is just as important, even when it can't be seen. A few years ago, Paul recalls a show where a young blind girl chose her own kalimba. When she found her match, a cannonball gourd, she knew instantly. "She said, 'It's beautiful, I can feel it,'" shares Paul. "In that moment, my wife and I realized that what we were doing was very right."

My sister absolutely loves it

Got this for my sister's (28) birthday since she is talented with all sorts of instruments and she has really enjoyed it. She keeps it at her desk at work and can just mess with it between meetings etc so I'm super happy to have found it. #sweepstakes

Love this gift!!

The whole family enjoying picking it up to play. A unique gift for music lovers😊

Fun!

Lots of fun on Christmas day figuring out how to play the finger piano. Instructions that came with it were great!

My kids are obsessed.

The kalimba comes with a little blue book filled with songs. My 7-year-old has been able to learn them all on his own. It's so neat to see!!!

Well done

My 8 year old loves it. Quality is good! The sound, even better.

My grandson loves it!

Gave it on Christmas Eve and he thought it was the best gift ever! I'm sure he has it mastered by now.

Musicians will love it!

My son is a long-time musician who is constantly looking for unique sounds to use in his music production. He was blown away by this gift. And he was not the only one who loved it. We all gave it a try. And pick it up periodically if we sit it sitting on the table. It's not just for the serious musicians. But anyway who likes music. It even comes with a users manual to teach you how to use the instrument. The craftmanship is beautiful. I love that it is made in the USA and supports a family business. This is a very unique and wonderful gift.

Great purchase

Great unique gift for my musician son. He posted a video of him playing it right after it arrived!

What age is this recommended for? I have a 2 1/2 year old grandson who loves playing a ukulele.

Verified reply from Allison

We recommend 13 and up.

What type of amplifier should I get for the electric thumb piano? I plan to buy two for my grandsons birthdays. Grandma does know much

Verified reply from Valerie

You would need a standard ¼" guitar cable/cord and any musical instrument / guitar amplifier. The amp is not required for the item. The acoustic and electric versions function the same way - electric will simply be louder if connected to an amplifier.

Will this become out of tune with time, and is it possible to tune it ourselves?

Verified reply from Valerie

Yes, this will need to be tuned eventually, and yes, you can tune it yourself!

Would any musicians out there recommend the Cedar Thumb Pianos (electric version) for an adult musician who creates and produces music elcetronically? He has software with an incredibly wide variety of sound options but also incorporates real instumrents he plays like electric bass, keyboard, udu and djembe drums.I'm just trying to figure out if it's superfluous for him or might add a nice layer. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Verified reply from Marisa

Absolutely, as long as he doesn't already have a thumb piano. They make a unique sound and the diatonic scale they're tuned to adds to their effect.

Thank you I just bought the electric one, it is great good quality, I was thinking connecting it to the outlet on my speaker tower were I connect my phone and laptop to listening to musik, it doesn't work? is it defect or doesn't work that way? thank you Heike

Verified reply from Nichole

These are only recommended to connect to an amp.

Does a song book come with this?

Verified reply from Colleen

Yes, this does come with a song book filled with traditional melodies like "You are my sunshine," "Kumbaya," and "Happy Birthday."

Do you have any song guides or song books to go along with this?

Verified reply from Marisa

Yes, our Cedar Thumb Piano does come with instructions/songbook.

What key are these tuned to?

Verified reply from Jeffrey

The Cedar Thumb Piano is tuned to the key of C major. You'll make beautiful music,we're sure!

I don't know whether to get acoustic or electric. I just want to use it for pleasure.

Verified reply from Marisa

Thanks for your question. Well, here's one way of looking at it: You can play the acoustic one acoustically only. You can play the electric one acoustically AND electrically. So there's that. But really, it's your own personal preference. We love them both! Thanks for shopping with UncommonGoods.

Where can I buy replacement tines for the piano. It has been played so much - one has broken.

Verified reply from Jeffrey

Thanks for the question. Oh no! We're sorry to hear a tine has broken here. If you contact customer service (888-365-0056) or email then at help@uncommongoods.com, we will gladly get a new one out to you at no cost.
