What Makes It Uncommon

Benjamin Giguere melds cremated remains into a work of wearable, memorial glass art—a moving reminder that, "from the stars we came, and to the stars we return."

  • You’ll receive an easy-to-use collection kit along with complete instructions for gathering a small amount of your loved one’s ashes and sending it to Benjamin’s studio.
  • The kit also includes an optional questionnaire that allows you to share details about your loved one, so Benjamin can honor their memory while crafting your piece.
  • After Benjamin’s studio receives your ashes, a glassblower will heat glass in the furnace to a molten state, then remove it to add a thin layer of the ashes along with dazzling color swirls. Next, it will be returned to the furnace to meld the elements together, and finally, sculpted by hand.
  • The finished pendant is set on a rhodium-plated backing engraved with a heart, and hangs from an 18" sterling silver cable chain.
  • Cremated remains have special shipping requirements—please see below for information that will help you purchase the best option.
  • Handmade in Rhode Island.
Shipping requirements for sending ashes safely
The U.S. Postal Service has strict requirements for mailing cremated remains (human or pet). As of 2025, all remains must be shipped in a special USPS cremated remains box, sealed with USPS tape. Other boxes or mailers are not permitted and may result in delays or returned shipments. This is a nationwide policy, and the options below will help to make the process simple and stress-free.

Select one of these options from the dropdown menu:

Cremation Memorial Galaxy Necklace ($175)
  • You will receive a memorial collection kit and complete instructions on how to gather your ashes and send them to Benjamin’s studio to create your necklace. You will not receive a USPS cremated remains box or tape.
  • You will need to order the USPS cremated remains box directly from USPS—it’s free and comes with the USPS tape. Get it here. When you’re ready to send your ashes to Benjamin’s studio, Uncommon Goods will provide a free prepaid shipping label.
Cremation Memorial Galaxy Necklace With Shipping Box ($190)
  • Uncommon Goods will ship the USPS cremated remains box and tape in the same package as your memorial collection kit. You will not need to order it from USPS. When you’re ready to send your ashes to Benjamin’s studio, we will also provide a free prepaid shipping label.
  • The additional $15 covers our cost to ship the flat USPS box and tape to you.

Due to the handmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

When Benjamin Giguere accepted a temp job at a small-town crystal factory in Vermont, he never could have known that it’d lead to a 22-year-and-counting career in glass art. But once his interest was piqued, there was no turning back. Benjamin has since apprenticed with masters of the craft all over the world, experimenting with color and techniques and honing his talent. Eventually, this led to creating a thriving studio in Providence, Rhode Island, where he not only showcases his stunning creations, but also passes his knowledge and experience on to future leaders in the field.

Is this product customizable in any way? I see a a green-swirl disk and a red heart advertised, but are other colors or simple shapes that fit on the same backing plate possible? I'd like for the necklace to reflect the tastes of the person being memorialized if at all possible.

Great question! These pendants cannot be customized. Due to the handmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary. The backing is engraved with a heart. Hope this answers your question.

How big is the pendant?

Verified reply from Madlen

Fantastic question!! the pendant is 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0. Hope this answers your question.

Can the pendant get wet at all? Based on cleaning instructions, does this mean to avoid even occasional shower, exercise exposure etc? Worried how fragile/delicate for daily wear …?

Water generally does not damage sterling silver. *But* water does cause silver to oxidize (darken) more quickly, and what type of water and the chemicals in it has an impact on how much it will cause your silver to change color Do not use ammonia, cream cleaners or any harsh chemicals to clean glass art. Aggressive detergents can damage the surface and leave an irreversible patchy, cloudy or milky effect Do not put extremely hot or cold liquid onto your glass as this may cause it to crack
