Philippines-based artist Loly Gomez left rice farming behind in 1972 to open a shop, selling pieces made from recycled glass. When her work caught the eye of Chicago designer and entrepreneur Carmi Plaut, an international partnership was born. The pair have been designing together for more than 25 years, with Loly also in charge of manufacturing in the Philippines and Carmi handling marketing from Chicago. "The collaboration is so natural and so wonderful," says Loly. "Like family."

Made of plastic

It's pretty and likely handmade, but be warned that the material is plastic and wires, not recycled glass as advertised. I tested on the flower petals and hummingbird wing - not cool to touch like glass would feel, light taps with a coin had dull sounds and not the ting I would expect to hear with glass. Then I noticed the tiny bit of excess 'glass' - I pulled on it and was flexible, FOR SURE not glass. Still a nice gift for someone; I chose to return it since I felt I didn't get what I had paid for.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are glad to hear it is pretty and a nice gift, and we can also guarantee this is 100% glass! The maker recycles tempered glass, hand polish it, hand paint it and then they mosaic it onto metal or wire or plastic backings. All by hand. They’ve been recycling glass products for over 10 years now and specializes in upcycled products.
