What Makes It Uncommon

Libel Case

Winston Churchill once said, "Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip." On the other hand, you could throw tact to the wind and go straight for this collection of zingers from great authors. Tim and Aurelia Sanders' snark-filled chart compiles unforgettable insults in an interconnected map. They run the gamut, from sassy to sophisticated, including Hedda Hopper's playful hyperbole (You had to stand in line to hate him), Madame Roland's canine analogy (The more I see of men, the more I like dogs), and Jonathan Swift's understated wordplay (Some folks are wise, and some otherwise). And of course, a smattering of colorful insults from Shakespeare, the playwright who practically invented the art of the poetic put-down. It makes a great gift for any bibliophile or friend who enjoys acerbic wit. You might just note that the gift is made in good fun. Made in Madison, Wisconsin.

Tim and Aurelia Sanders think people should enjoy more mirth. They mixed together data visualization, writing, and humor to create artwork that was smart as well as funny. Their process begins with a mix of ideas and sketches, which are gradually refined through research, experimentation, and "occasional hair pulling." Timothy employs his background as an art director and playwright, and Aurelia keeps their projects well edited and on track. "It's a great pleasure to see a passerby stop at one of our posters, lean in close, and start to laugh," they say.

Have a peek at Tim's sketchbooks to see how his thought process works as he creates new posters.

Christmas Hit

I got this for my Dad for Christmas as he's a retired English teacher. He loved it and we all had a good laugh reading off the various quotes. He's planning on getting it framed for his office. The poster was sturdy, quality material, it was packaged conveniently, and shipped promptly. Very satisfied. #sweepstakes

Great Gift for English Major

This chart contains a great mix of known and unfamiliar references and was perfect for my very sarcastic and forward former roommate. He was an English Major and loved it. He already uses some of the quotes on the chart, too!

Graduation Gift

IT IS VERY PHILOSOPHiCAL FOR Brainiac Doctorate students and their grandparents !!!

For a fan of a good, well-crafted insult.

I goth this for my sisters birthday gift. It was a hit!

Creative and unique for the reader in your life

Great gift….clever and amusing

She loves it so much!

I gifted this to a friend for Christmas, and she was thrilled. It's the perfect gift for her. Very happy with this purchase.

Highly recommend

This gift was given to a friend for their birthday that has a true live for literature. Their reaction was priceless! Perfect for the people who has everything!

Been a rough 2 years for nurses

Been a rough 2 years for my daughter a hospice nurse. Thought something funny would be a good gift. Step back from the sadness and stress . It had everyone laughing.

Nice gift for holiday party

This was a gift that could be either for gender and any age

So funny for any reader!

We bought this to give our college-aged-nephew for Christmas! After I showed my son, he told me a teacher has the same one up in one of his classrooms and the kids all think it's really cool! Such a clever idea for any reader or intellectual…or really just goofball! Haha!!

What is this chart made of?

Verified reply from Ashley

Hi! The chart is made out of100 lb fsc-certified archival paper. Thank you for asking your question.

Hello, do you sell the wood hanging bar frame that's shown in one of the images?

Verified reply from Erik

We sure do! Check them out here: https://www.uncommongoods.com/product/magnetic-poster-frame

Do you offer a discount for "bulk" orders? I can think of at least 4 author friends for whom I'd like to purchase both this chart as well as the Shakespearean Insults chart. Not to mention copies of both for myself! So just offhand that's 10 charts. And that's just off the top of my head! I also have some family members who are teachers that these would also make great gifts for as well. And friends from readers groups... The list grows but my wallet doesn't!

Hello! Is this item family-friendly?

Verified reply from Leighton

The quips may be less than polite but none of the language is too colorful, save for some antiquated swears and clever implications. For the most part the quotes are witty and charming, sure to get a laugh from all ages and teens especially, although some you might not want the littlest ones repeating!

Hi there! I teach 6th grade English and I think my students would get a kick out of this! I can't see from the previews, but are there any swear words or phrases that would make this inappropriate for the classroom? Thanks so much!

Verified reply from Melody

Hello! There are no explicit curse words, but this is filled with insults so we're not sure which one you would deem as inappropriate. Does "You ride well, but you don't kiss nicely at all," by Thomas Hardy count as inappropriate for your sixth graders? Someone wrote in a review that they gifted this item to a teacher to hang in the classroom. I hope this helped!

Are smaller sizes available?

Verified reply from SiRandal

Greetings! Thanks for your question. The only size that we have available for sell at this time, measures at 24" in height x 18" in width. I hope this info helps you. Thanks for shopping with us and Happy Holidays!

I'd love to purchase this (literary insult) chart over the Shakespearean chart for my sister who has an extensive home library...but why doesn't it come with an option to purchase it with a frame as the other charts do? If it is at all possible to get this chart with a similar frame I'd be eternally grateful.

Verified reply from Alexis R

Although we love to give you everything you desire, this particular item does not have a framed option. Typically custom items and made-to-order item have these types of options. Along with some select warehouse options.
