What Makes It Uncommon

In Poland, the traditional czerpak, or loop mug, was once used to scoop water from wells or ladle stew from simmering pots. Today, artisans Jacek Kalich and Weronika Kalich carry on that legacy—reimagining this classic shape as a cozy, multipurpose mug for modern life. Handmade from stoneware, this charming piece is perfect for a hearty cup of soup or stew, and also serves a generous mug of coffee or tea.

Each piece takes 12 days to create using centuries-old techniques, and passes through the hands of multiple artisans before it's hand-painted and signed.

Husband and wife Jacek and Weronika Kalich hail from Boleslawiec, Poland, the epicenter of Polish pottery making and a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. Jacek started the business in his garage with three artists but now employs 30. The process involves a sculptor creating a mold, hand-pouring clay, drying, smoothing, the first firing, cleaning, painting, glazing, a second firing, and packing. Each artisan meticulously handles a specific step before the pottery is shipped to America.
