While France, Italy, and Wisconsin are often synonymous with cheese, Poland stands proudly among the world's top 10 cheese producers. Traditional Polish pottery pieces like this one, also known as a Cheese Lady, elegantly safeguard partially eaten wedges and blocks, preserving their freshness while adorning kitchen counters with timeless charm. Although only the painter signs the piece, each kitchen keeper takes 12 days to create using centuries-old techniques passing through the hands of multiple artisans before it reaches you.

Husband and wife Jacek and Weronika Kalich hail from Boleslawiec, Poland, the epicenter of Polish pottery making and a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. Jacek started the business in his garage with three artists but now employs 30. The process involves a sculptor creating a mold, hand-pouring clay, drying, smoothing, the first firing, cleaning, painting, glazing, a second firing, and packing. Each artisan meticulously handles a specific step before the pottery is shipped to America.

It's a beautiful item!

This is such a sturdy item, with beautiful and clear colors. I already own several Polish Pottery items, and this one does not disappoint! I took one star off, because the top does not fit well on the bottom. Instead, it sits directly on top of the rim, instead of fitting on the plate itself. Because of this, I think it may be easy to knock off.

Charm and whimsy

Love my little butter keeper. She holds half a stick of butter under her skirts, keeping it fresh and charmingly out of sight. She looks delicate but is sturdy and practical. Love having her on the table or on the counter.
