The Experience

You’d love to learn watercolor painting (or pick it up again) but you’re not sure how to begin. Expert instructor Addie Stunkard will help you get started. Join Addie for a 90-minute live virtual workshop where you’ll learn the essentials of watercolors and practice your skills as you paint an especially relaxing subject: beautiful houseplants.

  • Before class, Addie will provide you with a list of materials and her own traceable foliage templates.
  • No previous art experience is necessary—you’ll learn a simple graphite transfer process to create outlines of the plants and pots, and Addie will walk you through fundamental watercolor techniques.
  • Once you’ve got the basics down, you’ll spend the rest of the class painting away, with Addie on hand to answer questions.

Class length: 90 minutes
We suggest: You should finish your masterpiece in 90 minutes, but you may want to leave time after class to put the finishing touches on your botanical beauties.

About

Growing up in a large family surrounded by music and art, Addie Stunkard always knew she wanted to be an artist. She studied watercolor painting and illustration at Oklahoma State and after a stint in marketing, she launched her graphic design business. Along with her design work, she shares her passion for art by teaching. "I feel like painting can be seen as such an intimidating concept," she says. "My goal is for someone who's never picked up a brush before to walk away with something beautiful."

For this class, you'll need: the printed houseplant template (included in link below), an 8-12 color watercolor palette, 140-lb watercolor cold-pressed paper, one large round and one small round brush, a pencil, paper towels, a cup of water, a hair dryer, a fine point pen, and a glass or plastic plate.

Great use of time, learned quite a bit in 90 min

Having no prior painting experience, I'd say I learned a lot in a short time. How to effectively create highlights and shade, how to lay water down first to keep the color in one area and the graphite transfer method for adding clear boundaries and lines. The moderator was there to help with any technical difficulties and allow the artist to focus on teaching the class. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon and learn something new.

Beginner class

This class was a gift from my daughter as I enjoy creative experiences. The instructor was very good, took her time teaching some techniques that were new to me and made good use of the 90 minutes. I was able to finish one small painting and am looking forward to using the rest of the templates that came with the class. My daughter also purchased the watercolor kit that was suggested. That was a disappointment as the paints were different than those used by the instructor and the brushes didn't hold their shape. . Using new hard color wells and trying for rich colors takes time , which we didn't have. The instructor used watercolor tubes which are ready immediately and provide rich colors take and help with the techniques she taught. I began the class feeling defeated but was happy that the rest of the class went well.

A great class for anyone who wants to make some art

Artists, non-artists, or maybe-artists will love this class. Some great practice and training tips up front then you get into the project. Fun to partake with others from around the country (and the world). Loved it and am inspired to try more paintings and more classes!

Great Intro to Watercolors

Had a great time taking the Vlad with my daughter - it was her Christmas present to me. Got to spend an afternoon with her and my tiny granddaughter while we learned a new art firm together. Instructor and moderator were great. Recommend this course for the lay-artists among us wanting to try something new. Pic is of our unfinished pieces that we plan to finish together.

Awesome watercolor class

I would recommend this watercolor class to anyone who is interested in starting to paint. The instructor was amazing, easy to understand. We were able to ask questions and she answered every one with great advice. I have wanted to paint in watercolor but was afraid I wouldn't be any good. I got this class as a gift and loved every minute and it was the push I needed to really start painting. Thank you so much

Loved this class!

I love watercolor but had never taken a class before - this was a great introduction to basic techniques! The instructor was super kind, friendly, knowledgeable, and taught at a great pace; even in just 90 minutes, I learned a lot that will help me improve in future, and I was amazed by how well my painting came out. Well facilitated by both the instructor and the Uncommon Goods moderator. I also loved the paint set and brushes suggested with the class. Highly recommend!
