The Experience

keyboard_arrow_up

You and your special someone have a zillion photos of each other, but none of them can compare to a hand-painted portrait that captures the true spirit of your love. Too bad you’re not artists…but wait, what if you were? Join professional art instructor Annie Monaghan for a romantic live virtual class where you’ll learn how to paint watercolor portraits of one another that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

  • Class will open with an intimate exercise of gazing into each other’s eyes for one full minute to connect deeply and dispel awkwardness—but don’t worry, a giggle or two is totally allowed. (If a long-distance partner is joining you virtually, you can do this exercise together using a separate device.)
  • Working with a favorite photograph, each of you will create a graphic transfer outline that’s enhanced by your live study of one another’s features.
  • No prior art experience is necessary—you’ll learn basic painting techniques and put them into practice right away as you color the outline, with Annie on hand to answer questions.
  • Make it an unforgettable date night or anniversary celebration with champagne, chocolate, and candlelight (just be sure you have enough light to paint by!) or make this class the first phase of a thoughtful gift exchange with your significant other.
  • You’ll probably complete your masterpieces during class, but we recommend leaving time afterward to brush in the finishing touches and linger in that romantic mood.
Class length: 90 minutes
We suggest: Skip a trip to the craft store and add our Watercolor Paint Kit, Set of 36 Colors to your purchase of this class; in addition to the paints, it comes with 10 art brushes, watercolor paper, and a zip-up pouch.

About

When Annie Monaghan was nine years old, she told her mother she wanted to be an artist or a teacher when she grew up. Her mother wisely responded, "Why not both?" Annie's been making and teaching art ever since. Based in Cleveland, the artist and instructor enjoys working in media that range from watercolor to embroidery, and likes to share her enthusiasm with her students. "It's so important for artists to enjoy the process and feel positive about themselves as they create art," she says, adding, "If you're not having fun, what's the point?"

For this class, you'll need a color photo of your subject on 8.5"x11" or 6"x9" printer paper, a cup for water, paper towels, a graphite pencil, a paint palette, a hair dryer, cotton swabs, painter's tape, the optional Watercolor Paint Kit or 140-lb cold-pressed watercolor paper, a watercolor palette with 8-12 colors, brushes in various sizes and a clip board (optional).
