I wanted to love it
My daughter gave this to me for Christmas. I was so excited. I love history, like to cook, and we both love Uncommon Goods. I have never been disappointed with a purchase until now. The first recipe was great. It was a Rosa Parks recipe. We had my niece and her children over for dinner. It was fun. I think the next recipe was for ice cream. I don't have an ice cream maker. Another recipe was a very involved cake recipe which was basically a fruitcake (not very popular in my family.) Another was for a Julia Child yeast bread. That was doable but it was time consuming (as yeast breads are.) The last was for beer. I prefer wine but I'll drink a cold beer occasionally. I don't want to make beer, I think that's not a recipe for the general public. There was recipe for buttermilk pies, I made that, it was very good. Our plan was to get together for dinner once a month to have one of the recipes. We thought they would be more common things that would be fun to make and eat but not need a special kitchen appliance (ice cream maker) or might appeal to a broader audience. That's just my personal opinion. I think the idea is great, it just didn't work for me.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. We truly appreciate your thoughtful feedback, and we're sorry to hear that this gift didn’t quite meet your expectations—especially since it started off with such a fun and meaningful cooking experience. We love that you and your daughter planned to make a recipe each month together—that’s exactly the kind of connection we hope to inspire. While we aim to include a variety of recipes that are both historically interesting and enjoyable to prepare, we completely understand that some may require tools or tastes that don't suit everyone. Your point about accessibility and broad appeal is a valuable one, and we’ll certainly take that into account as we look to improve this product. If there's anything we can do to help make this right, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

My brother loves to cook and also enjoys history. This was the perfect thoughtful combination of two things he appreciates. He loved this gift. I'd highly recommend.

Meh
So far it's pretty underwhelming. My first recipe was for pancakes, then one for plain white bread. I'm an avid cook and was looking forward to some challenges or things I haven't tried.

We appreciate your feedback! We hope you'll be impressed by your next recipes from well-known figures in history such as Emily Dickinson's cake recipe and Rosa Parks' pancake recipe, all in their own hand writing!

This was the coolest gift my mom never knew she needed.
The description of the item was very thorough and was actually even cooler than I anticipated. Everything arrived in great shape. I love the fact that you receive the recipes in their exact original form (for example, Rosa Parks' pancake recipe was on an envelope and had some scribbles). There is a printed transcription that comes along with each recipe, in case there is something that may be illegible, or for instance, a capital T instead of 'tbsp', like is written in modern recipes. My mom has told me again and again what a wonderful gift it was. And I love that it's a subscription! So the 'giftee' has something to look forward to!

Creative In-Law Christmas Gift
I was truly stumped about what to give my inlaws this year, my spouse had a great gift for my parents and I refuse to be outdone! They are huge chefs and history nerds so this was perfect! I would never have imagined this as a gift idea but just found it while scrolling uncommon goods. Highly recommend for anyone who loves to be in the kitchen and is an adventurous eater! I haven't tried any of the recipes but I have been told they were good! Can't wait to hear more from my inlaws each month! #sweepstakes

Rocky start but good customer service
My initial order was from a different subscription. I had subscribed to a historical recipes subscription but I received some kind of strange historical letters packet instead. Since the first delivery was a Christmas gift, it was a bit disappointing. That being said, the customer service response was very quick and helpful. They refunded the cost of the first order, corrected the error, and then sent the correct packet. We'll need to get a few more to see how the quality holds up. My wife's favorite part is that they recreated what the original recipe had been jotted down on.

Great gift for a at home baker!
I bought the subscription for my daughter' Christmas present. She made the pancakes today. Unfortunately, she's allergic to peanuts so she had to do some research on what could replace the peanut butter (sunflower butter). She had fun making them and looks forward to the next recipe to try out.

Hi! Would love to order but wondering what is the "folio" it comes with?
Verified reply from Michael
The folio, part of the History By Mail subscription, is made of vegan leather. It is designed to hold the replica documents and envelopes included in the subscription, and can hold approximately 85 flat pages. The folio features a vintage-inspired design, a classic brown color, and a metallic red embossed logo. It also has a brass snap button for closure

I want to give this as a gift and just want to verify that all the recipes given are the full and complete recipe to bake/cook. Also, I've read some reviews and it seems like some of the recipes call for things we do not use anymore(?) do you provide recommended substitutions for things like that in the subscription?
Verified reply from Allison
Thank you for your questions! All of the ingredients are available. Each month your recipient will receive replicas of real handwritten recipes from historical figures that you can still make today. The Rosa Parks' "Featherlite" pancakes are made from eggs, milk, butter, and peanut butter. Emily Dickinson's Black Cake asks for raisons, currants, dates, all spice plus more! With this subscription, you'll enjoy learning about each person and their favorite recipes for all to enjoy today.

If I purchased a six month subscription, would it auto-renew after the six months for another subscription? Or is it just a one time charge with no auto-renewal?
Verified reply from Allison
When purchasing the 6 month Recipes By Mail Subscription 1st Collection, it is a one time charge. It does not auto-renew. If you'd like the 6 month 2nd Collection, you would need to purchase that collection separately. Or, we do have a full year available!

Do the recipes come printed on standard sized recipe cards so they can filed away on the counter?
Verified reply from Ashley
Thank you for your question! You can expect each recipe to be different in size, similar to the image shown on the item page. Some recipes are written on envelopes while others may be written on full size letter paper. Hope this helps!

Hi. I want to order this as a Christmas gift. When should I order it so as not to ruin the surprise? Can I order it now for delivery starting in January? Or (even better) is there a way to perhaps receive the first letter myself to gift in person and then have the test sent directly to the recipient? Thank you!!
Verified reply from Michael
Your first document will be mailed a week after placing an order. The subsequent documents will be mailed on the 15th of each month. We suggest having the first letter sent to your self and submitting a change of address with us for the remainder of the subscription
