Terry Mudge built his business on something that didn’t exist—a science shop for grown-ups. “It seems like every science product is marketed exclusively for kids,” he explains. Leaving the safety of his career as a cryogenicist, Terry opened a store in his native Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2016 and launched a subscription box two years later. “Both times I created something specifically for the niche audience that I belonged to,” Terry says, “and both times that audience quickly embraced it."
