What Makes It Uncommon

Can you imagine golf with no tees? Or baseball without a glove? Probably not, but our favorite sports didn’t always have the same indispensable gear—someone had to invent it. This 6-month gift subscription treats superfans to some inside baseball (and football, and surfing, and skiing, and…) with remarkable replicas of real patents for iconic inventions that literally changed the game.

  • Each month, your giftee will receive a reproduction of the original patent for an essential piece of sports equipment.
  • Inside every mailing, they’ll find a replica of the real historical document from the U.S. Patent Office, printed on high-quality paper with every word and illustration rendered in painstaking detail.
  • Accompanying context pages share the story behind the invention and shed light on the colorful background of our best-loved pastimes.
  • The first mailing arrives via UPS to ensure swift delivery, and the following mailings arrive by USPS First Class Mail.
  • Designed and printed in Illinois.

Ari Siegel

Ari Siegel has always loved how history comes alive when you approach it right. He grew up listening to stories from his WWII-veteran grandfathers, went on to work at the US Capitol, where he gave tours to guests, then gained an even deeper appreciation when he started checking out historical documents at the Library of Congress archives. With History by Mail, he hopes to share the excitement of holding something meaningful about our nation’s past in your own hands.
