It may seem like a long way from aerospace engineering to woodworking, but Alex Ahrens finds common ground in precision and attention to detail. His high-tech training gave him an eye for spotting flaws and solving complex challenges: skills that now shape the pieces he creates in his Austin, Texas, studio. Time spent working in product and packaging design also gave him an appreciation for practical, well-designed objects that are attractive as well as user-friendly. Inspired by the trails, parks, and public lands that have marked meaningful moments in his own life, Alex uses elevation data and modern carving tools to create pieces that help others stay connected to the places they love.
