Does the wooden tray have a recessed spot for the slate to be inserted? OR does the slate sit on top of the the board loosely?

The slate circle stays in mostly place due to the wooden tray border surrounding it. Since the circle is meant to be able to move from side to side, it isn't permanently stationed anywhere. Placing food on it won't cause it to move, but it could move a bit while something is being cut or sliced on it.
