What Makes It Uncommon

Water Works

If you're absent from photo-filled social media platforms, there's a good chance you missed one of the most bizarrely beautiful food trends ever: the Raindrop Cake. Not to worry: Originator Darren Wong has the kit with everything you need to whip up his flourless feat at home. Made from purified water, sugar, and a gelatin substitute called agar (yup, it's vegan), the refreshing treat is a mesmerizing dessert experience and an instant conversation starter. How does it taste? Well, that's up to you. Because once you've followed the kit's step-by-step instructions, the translucent treasure becomes a blank canvas where the sky's the limit for toppings and flavor combinations. Get that spoon and camera ready. Made in New York.

Darren Wong

Darren Wong never set out to be a culinary artist—he just makes things that speak to him. Without a baker’s training, he took inspiration from Japanese desserts and was free to experiment. After months of trial and error, Darren debuted his Raindrop Cake at a New York event where it sold out and soon became a foodie phenomenon. “I think people have expectations when it comes to desserts,” he explains. “I threw those out the window because I’m not a chef. I wanted to create a moment of delight.”

This was an amazing gift!

Several years ago, my dad tried (and miserably failed) to make a raindrop cake. He's a good baker, but this was one thing he could never get. It was sad, too, because he bought the molds and all the stuff, did the research, and was very exited about it. We all forgot about the entire thing, I'm pretty sure he threw away the molds he had. A few weeks ago, I bought this for him as a late Father's Day present. He was so happy. He made it with my younger brother, and they had a blast figuring it out. The kit helped him a lot but they still got the fun of experimenting to make it perfect. They ate it. Obviously it wasn't amazing(it really isn't supposed to be!), but everyone had a great laugh about the whole thing. I honestly think it always bothered him that he couldn't make that, so I'm so happy I found this little kit!!! Thanks to uncommon goods for making such a well put together kit❤️

Fun virtual class!

This was a fun thing to do on a Saturday afternoon.

Missing component

Well, the negative taste reviews are not the problem. It's clear what to expect - agar is a type of gelatin and there's no other flavoring added at baseline. It's like unflavored jello. Kinako also SHOULD taste like beans or grassy cuz that's exactly what it is - soybean powder. The whole point of this dessert is its simplicity and an art. One of the most difficult Japanese dishes to get right is actually noodles with a simple dipping sauce. The problem with our kit however, was the complete lack of agar, the key ingredient. We opened the cans of sugar and Kinako in case hiding in there but no. Completely missing. We sub'd gelatin we happened to have (agar is vegetable, gelatin animal-based) and will see how it goes but really disappointing.

Yes I would buy again

grandsons and I make the raindrop cakes in the afternoon and ate them for breakfast the next morning. We then floated the little paper boats down the river in front of their home. That was a nice bonus of this product!

Don't waste your money!

My daughter was so excited to make these because they looked so unique, but they turned out to be a huge waste of $. I'm embarrassed that I gave this as a gift. My daughter had fun following the recipe but they tasted so gross when they were finished. They were such a disappointment! It was like eating unflavored, really thick jello. She had even tried adding some fruit to several, but that didn't help at all. Don't waste your money!!!

Response from merchant

Hi! We are so sorry to hear that happened. We’ve messaged you to help.

I would buy this again!

It was a gift. They said it was amazing tho!

Unique and perfect for the baker who has everything

I sent this as a gift

Waste of money!

Thought it would be a cool gift. Glad it was only my husband I gave it to. I'd be so, so embarrassed if I had given this to a friend. Despite following directions to scrub out the mold, it still stuck. Cake tasted literally like nothing and had the weirdest texture. Worse than clear, tasteless gelatin. The powder and brown sugar syrup could not make it edible. Bowl leaked all over the counter. Ended up in the trash after 1 bite.

Response from merchant

We're sorry to hear that! We've reached out to assist you further!

Easy and straightforward instructions

Made with kids and it was easy and straightforward. Had a very familiar taste. All in all a good way to try something new!

Not recommend

Would not recommend this product. The contents of the box were simple. The instructions were very straightforward. Downside is after following all the instructions, it still didn't turn out. The brown sugar tasted normal but the kinako had a terrible taste (sort of like green beans or grass)

Response from merchant

We appreciate your feedback!

Do you consider reverse osmosis water as purified? If not, what is purified water?

Verified reply from Monique

Yes! Reverse osmosis water works well with the kit.

Can you compost the boats???

Verified reply from Michelle

Hi! The boats are made from bamboo. While bamboo is compostable, it may depend on what you use or how you are composting.

What would you suggest for toppings and flavor combinations? My purchase was a gift for someone and I'd like to include some extras so they have an extra fun time with this kit. Thanks!

Verified reply from Jasmine

Hello! Some powders or syrups would be a great extra for toppings.

Is this kit vegan? It seems that most of the ingredients are free of materials that come from animal sources or are processed with animal-based substances, but I was concerned mainly about the sugar. Is the sugar included in the kit processed with bone char, or can it (and all the other materials/ingredients) be considered vegan?

Verified reply from Michelle

Hi! Yes this kit is vegan and gluten-free!

does the box only contain enough materials to make one cake?

Verified reply from Jasmine

The material in the box Makes 6 raindrop cakes. Please use purified water for best results.

Is this product gluten-free?

Verified reply from Allison

Yes!
