Bioluminescent Octopus Orb
Made in USA
Made from
glass, metal, seawater, algae
Measurements
3.5" L x 3.5" W x 7.5" H
Care
Remove the cap from the PyroDino pouch. Holding over a sink, pour entire contents of PyroDino pouch into the orb. PyroDinos require daily light and moderate temperature to survive. PyroDinos will only light up at night. During nighttime hours, when it is dark, give your orb a swirl to see the PyroDinos shine!
Feeding instructions: Wait 5-7 days before feeding with DinoNutrients. Continue adding a small amount (5-10% of total culture volume) every 1-2 weeks. Stop or reduce feeding if bioluminescence is significantly diminished after feeding. If kept in a cool, dark place, DinoNutrients will last six months.
Notes
Complete Kit includes: glass orb, octopus stand, 7-oz. spout-pack of PyroDinos (dinoflagellates), and 3.5-oz spout- pack of DinoNutrients.
Algae grown in California, orb and stand made in China.

Unique and Beautiful!
I got this just a week ago. It's supposed to be a Christmas present for my good friend, but due to the live nature, I of course set it up first and am keeping it in my room. Now I'm tempted to keep it for myself ~ At first, the glow was moderate and even started to fade a bit, so I looked through the *very clear* instructions. Nutrients were fine, light was fine, so that left heat. I put the orb, on its stand, on a heating pad set to "low" to get it within a 65-69 F range. That same night, the glow was not only stronger, but the dinos were twinkling in the dark! This product is so fascinating, and I can't wait to gift it!

Cool at first but all died within 1 month
Looked awesome at first. Nice stand and glowed nicely when swirled. After about a month it doesn't glow anymore even when following light, feeding and temp instructions.
Response from merchant
Thank you for posting! We're so sorry to hear that they only lasted a month for you. We appreciate you doing your best to follow the instructions -- when done so properly, they can last up to 6 months. We've emailed you directly in order to offer some additional support.

Beautiful, but disappointing
This product is beautifully made - I love the design. And I loved the idea of capturing the beauty of luminescence. I followed the instructions meticulously, but the results were disappointing. About once an evening, I'd pick up the orb and see a quick flash of light, and that was it. I'd then take it into a pitch dark room and swirl it around, and you could definitely see a hint of luminescence, but really, it was so very underwhelming. I'll probably buy a pretty glass orb or some sort to display on the octopus stand.

I like the idea but was disappointed
I got this for my son but I have to admit, I was as excited as he was once all set up to see how this would look. The stand was pretty to look at but it did not live up to expectations. It did not light very much at all and for an extremely short time.

Dead Dinos
I was so excited for this present for my husband fro Xmas. Followed the instructions to the letter but when we put the liquid into the orb -it never glowed. Guess the bioluminescent algae was dead. Waste of Money and I am so disappointed.

This product is beyond gorgeous!
We now have a new family tradition. Every night before bed, kids and all, we gather into the master bedroom, turn off all the lights, and swirl the bioluminescent algea. We all love it! It's otherworldly to see them all light up. Feels like you're a sorcerer! Our kids now jest that between the cats, dogs, guinea pigs, snake, and algea: we now have over 9,000 pets. I have already recommended it to multiple friends!

Be sure the after you first put it together, put in indirect sun ight for the first 24 hours. That gives it time to become active at night.

Very Good Product, Would Definitely Recommend
My sister shakes this up every night and really loves it. I'm glad I could find a nice gift for her. It reminds me of a sort of potion from the ocean.

If I wanted to buy this now and give it as a gift in approximately 2 months would I be able to do that? How long can it sit unopened?
Verified reply from Allison
Your can leave the PyroDinos in their pouch for up to two months after delivery if they receive daily light. Loosen the cap weekly to allow for some air exchange.

Hello! What kind of metal makes up the tentacles?
Verified reply from Maxienne
The Octostand is made of solid metal. The metal is a zinc alloy.

I would like to give this as a wrapped Christmas gift. Is there a way to purchase the octopus orb alone to wrap and then order the live parts later to be shipped when they can be opened immediately? Thanks for your help.
Verified reply from Michelle
Hi! The kit includes everything so it is not possible to ship some parts at different times.

Do the pyrodinos multiply over time?
Verified reply from Michael
Yes. PyroDinos are marine phytoplankton that reproduces asexually. PyroDinos will increase in number over time.

The octopus orb is very cool! My concern is every couple of days it seems to form the brown ring (indicating to add the food) but I feel like I am putting the food in too often - the description above says they should be fed every one to two weeks. I have only had the item for about a week and I have put food in twice. What am I doing wrong?
Verified reply from Melise
You may not be doing anything wrong actually! The brownish ring forms when the Pyrodinos are healthy, but if it happens as often as every couple of days there are two possible fixes. One is to empty out the pyrodinos a bit, if they're an active bunch they could need less help than others. Another fix would be to provide them with slightly less light, or less direct light as the amount of light they receive provides necessary nutrients and they could be getting too much of a good thing!

How long can they survive in the packaging before opening it up?
Verified reply from Leslie
Hello! Once they are received, you'll need to immediately open the box and place the PyroDinos in a moderately lighted room where they are out of direct sunlight or factors that can overheat them. Typical room lighting, artificial or natural, is fine. After they have settled, with the pouch standing upright, you can loosen the cap on the spout pouch to give them some air exchange. Note- keep the cap on the spout. With the cap slightly loose and in daily lighting conditions (typical room lighting) the pouch of PyroDinos can last several weeks

If a light from outside is not possible could a UV light be used in its place?
Verified reply from Cassandre
Yes, with daily light and moderate temperatures. Typical room lighting is all that is needed and it is not recommended to use a UV lamp. Indirect sunlight and typical room lighting will work fine(any lighting that could sustain a houseplant would be perfect!)
