The Experience

The Road Goes On

While wizards are not in the habit of turning up at front doors these days (alas!), everyone’s story is still an epic adventure. Join us for a remarkable 90-minute online experience that will teach you to map the most legendary realm of all: real life. Our guide on this quest is Brendan Lorber, a poet, writer, and artist whose fantastical biographical maps are on display in libraries and museums from Bed-Stuy to Edinburgh. Taking inspiration from classic fantasy fiction and role-playing games, Brendan’s imaginative style is uniquely suited to creating an extraordinary present for a friend or family member—and the class itself makes an unforgettable gift, especially for someone celebrating a milestone birthday.

Prior art experience is not required, but everybody will have some fun homework before class: listing the landmark events, passionate pursuits, and memorable moments that make up the history of their subject (these will become the map’s geographic features). Each map can cover a full life or focus on a specific time frame, such as the past year, college days, or that one amazing summer. Once the lesson begins, Brendan will get right into it with engaging, practical instruction and plenty of time to work and ask questions. No worries about specialized supplies, since this class comes with our custom Fantasy Mapmaking Kit, which includes a template on artist-quality paper, a French curve drawing tool, Brendan’s own cartography guide, a perfectly sized wooden frame, and more.

In an hour and a half, participants will go from apprentice mapmaker to master cartographer as they create a mythic masterpiece worth cherishing for years—drawing new versions may even become an annual tradition. While you likely won't finish your map in class, Brendan will equip you with the skills to complete your map with confidence. As Brendan says, Anyone can have a treasure map. In this class, you’ll be making maps that themselves are treasures.

Before class, you must complete the Concepting Your Map project, outlined here.

About

Ride the ferry to Brooklyn and make your way to its tallest hill. There, across the street from a vast Victorian-era cemetery, is the little castle that Brendan Lorber and family call home. This atmospheric locale is well-suited to the poet, writer, artist, and, now, maker of hand-drawn maps inspired by classic fantasy world-building. "I've always loved maps," says Brendan of his creative cartography. "They add a layer of intrigue and a sense of achievement when you get where you were going."

In addition to the map kit included with the class, you'll need a ruler, some blank sheets of paper, a pencil (a standard #2 works, but a mechanical pencil is preferred), and coffee or dried beans.

Super fun experience!

My husband and I were gifted this experience for Christmas and we had a great time learning from Brendan! We are excited to keep working on our map and have a unique piece of art that we made together.

The best way to spend 90 creative minutes!

The experience was outstanding and everything ran smoothly thanks to Brendan and Sam. The tutorial demo was extremely helpful.

Traversing Through New Territory on a Blank Map

It's a great class that gives a hands-on guide to mapping out your life or special event. It allows the Map Maker full authority to create their own topography. It was interactive and easily broken down. Need to complete the homework ahead of class, and plan for extra time after to complete it. Brendan was great at breaking it down in an easily absorbed way so you can do it on your own after and giving great ideas.

Fun, Informative, I Lost Track of Time

Fantastic presenter with an interesting topic! Map making sounds a little boring at first, but mapping parts of your life makes it much more interesting. It's 90 minutes, but I was very surprised when the presenter started the closing portion.

Makes drawing easy and the maps turn out awesome

I have had the urge to draw for years. I've tried books and courses, but THIS course with Brendan finally made the difference. Brendan was really good at breaking the process down into simple parts. He was also a delightful teacher - kind and funny and interesting and so helpful with all the questions from the folks in our class. I LOVED this course and could not be happier. I can't wait to finish the map I originally wanted, but now I have a ton of additional ideas to try for other maps too.

This was beyond fun!

I got this for my best friend to document the history of our friendship, and this class was such a great way to prompt memories and inside jokes between the two of us. I really enjoyed the creativity and the Choose Your Adventure nature of this as well :) Thank you Brandon!

Was hesitant when gifted but Loved it!

Great experience! This was gifted to me by my wife and I was a bit hesitant to do it...but LOVED everything about it. I'm not one that usually is introspective...so this was a great way to think about my journey and a great way to kick off the new year! Highly recommend

It hadn't occurred to me to do this but I love that I did!

This was a very fun class. I had no idea how to begin but he explained in a pleasant and accessible way. Though you won't have a finished map by the end of the class, you will have the know-how to make one.

Creative Journaling meets Cartography

The project is a mix of map making and journaling. For me, it was both fun and therapeutic, and a little but challenging because I don't know how to draw. The instructor shared some great planning and sketching techniques. I also enjoyed the linguistic aspect (playing with phonetics, creating alliterations), and pondering the essence of geographic features (desert = isolation; crater = abrupt/unpredicted). This was an awesome gift in that it's great fun, but not something I would think to buy for myself.
