A Cut Above

Alexandra Paliwoda's hand-forged tool was inspired by the ulu, an all-purpose knife used by the Inuit people for an impressive array of tasks—from chopping food to shaping blocks of ice to build igloos. A curved, easy-grip handle and beveled blade allow the knife to make quick work of fresh herbs, cheese, and crispy pizza, and a hand-forged, notched-steel stand offers convenient storage and display. Alexandra's romantic design is inspired by the Copper River as it flows through the untamed wilderness from its base at the Copper Glacier in Alaska's Wrangell St. Elias National Park. The back of each piece is hand-stamped with the artist's signature, an anvil with mountains and trees. Add a personal touch with two short lines of text, like a name and year. Handmade in Montana.

Due to the recycledandhandmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

location

Montana

I hammered out piles of ironwork and spent countless hours getting blisters and burns, until I could make something good.

Inspired by all things wild and free, Alexandra Paliwoda expresses her love of untamed places with her hand-forged ironwork. Born in the Rocky Mountains and raised in the backcountry of Alaska, she began working with metal in 2000, when she was certified as a farrier by Montana State University and forged horseshoes. She worked with horses and in agriculture while living a subsistence lifestyle in Alaska—including building her own cabin in the north country. Now based in Montana, she feels that the most important things in life are the experiences.
