What Makes It Uncommon

Masons Lodge

From the Hundred Acre Wood to cereal box mascots, the buzz is all about honeybees. But lesser-known pollinators like mason bees are solitary superstars that can pollinate about 100 times more plants than the average honeybee worker. Welcome friendly, industrious pollinators like mason and leafcutter bees with this interactive house.

Made from sustainably sourced, FSC-certified wood, its stacked "floors" feature openings inviting individual bees like masons, who furnish their homes with mud "mortar." Simply unscrew the wing nuts at the bottom to separate the floors for cleaning or inspection (in late fall or winter when you won't disturb the residents). This custom condo for beneficial buzzers provides protection and an ideal home to raise baby bees. Hang in a sunny spot facing southeast to catch morning sun. Full instructions included. Designed in the UK by beekeeper and conservationist Norman Sellers. Made in China.

Usually ships within 24 hours.

Perfect gift for a nature lover

It's the perfect addition to my grandmother's yard. Cute and functional! Took off a star because my husband had to polish the scratches off the copper top.

Great Gift!

My wife loved this and its a great little home for the native bees near us.

Bought as a gift, he seemed excited!

My father has talked for years about wanting to be a beekeeper so this was the perfect start! Hoping it works well and he loves it!

Cute little house for solitary bees

I did a lot of reading on solitary bee houses (farmer's almanac online has some great info) to ensure I was buying a quality bee hive and this one hits all the requirements and isn't a gimmick. The roof of the house juts out enough to protect the bees in the house and it's made from not bamboo (apparently a no no for bees). Anyway, two thumbs up! We placed it south-facing in June and it's been a couple weeks and no bees yet, but we may have missed the Spring nesting season. #sweepstakes

Great purchase. Gift for a friend and she was thrilled.

Friend has a beautiful property in western MA. Very spiritual and very much a nature lover. I previously got her a butterfly puddler from Uncommon Goods which she also loved. I have bought several items for family and friends here and it is my go to for unique gifts to send to my favorite people. Please keep the good stuff coming! Maybe next time I will treat myself with something special : )

Beautiful beehive!

A beautiful addition to a gardener's yard!

Perfect gift!

This was a gift.

Great gift for a gardener!

Such a unique gift. We had beehives growing up and they are a bit labor intensive with all the equipment, time, and angry bees. THIS is super cool. The bees come in and do their thing. They don't make honey so no need to rob the hive. You bring the eggs in and store in a basement or garage for the winter and in the spring…bees!!!!

Great gift for mom!

My mom has an extensive garden and loves to plant pollinator and butterfly friendly plants. She'd been interested in a back yard honey bee hive for a while, but ultimately decided against that. When I found this solitary bee hive I thought it was a great compromise! She was excited to receive this gift and was looking forward to finding a place in her garden for it. It was smaller than I expected, but that's actually not a bad thing as it'll be easier to find a place for it. She also liked that you can clean out some of the holes if a bee vacated. #sweepstakes

Yay!

I haven't been able to set it up yet but my mom loved the gift!

Does the hive include directions on how to clean it and how to over-winter the bees, etc? Also, are bee straws compatible with this hive?

Verified reply from Allison

Hi there! To clean simply unscrew the wing nuts at the bottom to separate the floors for cleaning or inspection (in late fall or winter when you won't disturb the residents). The hole sizes of this habitat are compatible with bee straws but are not needed. You can carefully separate the beehive trays to view the formation of small cells where the eggs are laid

Do the mason bees come with the hives?

Verified reply from Robert

Thanks for reaching out! This custom wood "condo" invites solitary pollinators to move in and decorate with mud "mortar." It does not come with live insects.

Are there any larger size hives available, or can I order a custom made larger hive?

Verified reply from Leslie

This is the only size available at this time and this isn't available for custom requests, but we will pass along your feedback!

It stated that the Mason Bees are throughout North America, so I wanted to verify that it would work in South Central Alaska?

Verified reply from Lelio

Yes, this bee hive is designed to house solitary bees. 90% of bees are solitary; it should attract bees in Alaska.

Is this safe to use with other types of beehives or will they potentially attack eachother?

Verified reply from Melody

Solitary bees are non-social and do not live in colonies.

Do I need to clean the hives annually?

Verified reply from Nicola

Greetings! Yes, it is recommended that the Solitary Bee Hive been cleaned at the end of each season (in late fall or winter). Simply unscrew the wing nuts at the bottom to separate the floors for cleaning or inspection.

Ummm do Mason make honey? And if they do, what do we do?

Verified reply from Brandon

Mason bees do not make honey.

Could this design attract other insects/bugs by accident?

Verified reply from Valerie

This hive is not treated with anything that will attract bees or other insects. The design is what makes it attractive to the mason bees, but there is nothing preventing other creatures from entering if they want to...

Can this be used anywhere in the U.S?

Verified reply from Jeffrey

Yes, Mason Bees can be found throughout North America. There are actually upwards of 140 species of Mason bees found in the US alone!
