So unique and cute
The recipient of these planters was very pleased at the design AND the quality of the build of these planters. What makes them extra special is that the ostrich's plumage changes based on what you plant! A big hit!

I love this planter -just bought it as a gift for a friend!
This ostrich planter is lovely -- and funny. It has a tiny head and huge feet... makes me smile every time I see it. It is lovely with a small potted plant put into the body. One bit of improvement would be flattening out the bottom of the body so that a flat pot with saucer under it can fit and not rock around.

Super cute
It's adorable, let's get that straight! But, for the price, it's definitely small and the quality of the welds are poor (my husband has to fix it up it several areas before we gift it).

Does one need to line the ostrich with something before planting? I understand about spraying it with a finish to prevent the finish from changing its appearance. But, more importantly, I am asking about actually lining the ostrich with - what? - coconut planter liner, for example? Or, can one plant using just the apparatus....it seems as if it would not hold dirt.
Verified reply from Melody
That's a great question! The bottom of the planter is porous, so you can line the planter with a coconut or moss fiber liner to make for easier planting and watering.

I also would purchase these if they were built much taller. Can't you find a way??
Verified reply from Allison
These planters are hand made by artisans in Kenya. At this time, they are only available in these sizes.

Do you have any plans to make these closer to the size shown in the picture? I would be interested in buying several, but the actual size is not what is shown in the picture. Thanks,
Verified reply from Alice
We do not have any plans for changing the Ostrich Planter. The photos are not intended to indicate the actual size; they are close-ups that allow you to examine the salvaged metal details. To be as clear as possible, we do also state that these are appropriate for small plants and succulents, and the dimensions are listed in the details.

Does this item rust or fade or change color? Can it be left outside over winter?
Verified reply from Valerie
These planters may develop rust or patina over time, though they can be used outdoors. You can spray them with a clear spray paint or sealant to help preserve the original finish if you'd like.

Why is everything on your site so deceiving? The Ostrich is in front of a LARGE Shrub and a Large Tree and appears in the picture to be as tall as the shrub. I find so many things that look great till you look at the details and it is tiny. If this is only 24 inches tall the planting part has to be really small.
Verified reply from Valerie
The bowl on the small planter is 6.5" Dia. x 2.5" D, and on the large planter it's 7.5" Dia. x 2.5" D. We try to be as clear as possible when describing our items but understand nothing beats seeing them in person - which is why we offer free returns forever. Thanks for the feedback!

What do the feet look like? I'm concerned about how well it stands on different surfaces (eg mulch v grass v patio)
Verified reply from Colleen
The feet look like a Y. If you click on the 2nd thumbnail under the main picture you will see a picture that includes the feet.

Is the height from the foot to the head of the crane or to the plant holder?
Verified reply from Valerie
The height is from the foot to the top of the head.
