Mushrooms sprouted in only a week!
This gift for my boyfriend completely over-delivered. We weren't expecting for anything to sprout for months, or even years. But after he meticulously followed the instructions and placing the log in the bathroom (shower ledge to be precise) - mushrooms started sprouting almost immediately. The key is dark and slightly damp conditions if you're growing inside. Thanks, UC!

I would buy this again
This is a very thoughtful and unique gift, my partner loved it so much. I love the products from this company, but I wish I didn't have to pay for shipping if I order over a certain price. #sweepstakes

Our log never sprouted
I bought this as a holiday gift (December) for my partner and we waited until the spring to soak it and try to sprout it and nothing happened. We soaked it several times but no luck. Not sure if because we live in Colorado and its dry that impacted it as well

Don't waste you time .... and I mean 3 years worth of time
Bought one for me, and one for my aunt. My aunt owns a plant store and grows all kinds of plants and vegetables in soil, hydroponically, etc. She takes growing live things very seriously. We were so excited about these logs! We followed every instruction exactly. Nothing happened - no growth on either log, THREE YEARS later. :( If I could give zero starts I absolutely would, but the system requires me to give at least one.
Response from merchant
Thank you for posting! We're so very sorry that Oyster Mushroom Log Kit did not fruit! Your Aunt definitely did everything right! Would she like to start another log? We are confident in this product and are more than happy to provide you with a no cost replacement! We've emailed you with the details!

Can't wait for the growing
Super excited to try but we got a younger plant and the instructions aren't specified for the age plant we have. Could you help please?
Response from merchant
Thank you for posting! We're so happy you're excited but also so sorry for any confusion about your log! The Initial fruiting can be as quick as six months, while some can take over a year. We hope that helps to clarify the timeframe a bit, also you can find the care instructions on the item page: https://www.uncommongoods.com/product/oyster-mushroom-log-kit Please email us at, help@uncommongoods.com for further support if anything else comes up.

Really cool gift idea but disappointing
I bought this as a christmas gift for my husband. He followed the instructions and mushrooms never grew even two years after waiting.
Response from merchant
Oh no! We're sorry to hear the spores never bloomed. This could be do to a variety of factors, as fungi are sometimes sensitive organisms. We've reached out to you to remind you of our product support line and return policy on live items :^)

Gave as a gift and it was well received
I gave this as a Christmas gift to someone who has been curious about starting to grow mushrooms for some time. They were very enthusiastic upon receiving! It's too soon to say about the mushrooms themselves (I see folks had varying success) but the price was good for a trial so I don't even mind. One thing to know is that this is literally a log in a box! Not even a packing slip inside. I had to print out the product page and also the instructions so the person wasn't confused about why I was giving them a log. I'd recommend for the vendor to include something in the boxes.

The perfect gift!
My partner was so excited when he opened this gift. We both love mushrooms, and this is such a fun experience to experience them from the ground up! Multiple people in the room during the unwrapping are now also looking into buying a mushroom log. I highly recommend!

I received my Oyster Mushroom Log but it did not come with instructions. There was a note on the paper packing slip/receipt to "click here for mushroom growing instructions and tips", but this was a paper receipt with nothing to click on. How do I get the instructions?

I received the product, but no instructions in the box. Closest thing I have is the order confirmation printed and under care instructions it reads "click here for mushroom growing instructions and tips," but again it's a printed page. How can I obtain the instructions?

How long can I keep it in the box after the inoculation date? I am gifting this for Christmas and don't plan on gifting it beforehand , the inoculation date is 9/23 and I just wanted to keep it in a box and wrap it. I saw a previous answer said it would be fine for a few weeks but this is a few months and now I'm a bit worried.
Verified reply from Itamar
Great question. This is a live item and we do not recommend keeping it boxed for months on end. We recommend opening and tending to the live mushroom spores as soon as receiving the logs :^) However, the spore should remain active. The log will be ready to attempt fruiting in about 7 to 9 months from the date of inoculation on the silver tag.

I received an oyster mushroom log, which I will be gifting .....I could not find instructions for growing oyster mushrooms, only shiitake.....In the FAQs, one response to this was that the instructions were good for both oyster mushrooms and shiitakes, while another answer was that they both required their own specific instructions in order to grow. Which answer is correct? The link provided for accessing instructions only provides instructions for shiitake mushrooms.....

Hello! Both kits follow the same instructions. Sorry for the confusion!

Hi I got 1 oyster log and 1 shitake log. The oyster instructions say to repeat soaking if log is under 4 months and the shitake says if under 7 months...are they different or is one timeframe correct?
Verified reply from Robert
Thanks for reaching out! Our Shiitake Mushroom Log Kit and our Oyster Mushroom Log Kit grow different mushrooms, so they each include instructions specific to that mushroom. The instructions for one log cannot be applied to the other. I hope this helps!

I received an Oyster Log. Overall, do you feel it is best to grow indoors or outdoors? If indoors, how do you suggest getting the necessary temperature fluctuation? If outdoors, what temperature range will the logs tolerate? (We live in Colorado where it can get pretty cold (it was -11 F yesterday, though that is unusual).)
Verified reply from Amy
Hello! The makers have confirmed that the log can definitely withstand cold temperatures, but we also suggest checking out the directions found here for lots of thorough information: https://www.uncommongoods.com/pdf/49180_instructions.pdf

How do I make sure I dont get pests when growing the mushrooms indoors?
Verified reply from Beau
It is best to be grown outdoors in a shady location. However, pests indoors should not be a problem. The makers have not seen any pest attack any logs in a clean house.

Bought 2 of these logs in July. Kept one, gifted one. Have soaked them 3 times (per directions) kept tented in basement and misted regularly. No signs of any mushroom growth. Zero. What else can I do?
Verified reply from Erik
The mushroom experts are here to help you! Many variables are involved in mushrooms fruiting. Please don’t give up! Try again, making sure the mycelium has run completely based on the date of inoculation. Keep a close eye on the moisture content of the log, and adjust your misting schedule and air exchange. There can be lots of trial and error involved to find what works for your environment. The log will be ready to attempt fruiting in about 7 to 9 months from the date of inoculation on the silver tag. It can take up to 12 months; however, that is not common. If any other questions come up, please do not hesitate to reach out!
