What Makes It Uncommon

You don’t need restaurant reservations or a passport for authentic flavors and aromas from Ethiopia. Eleni Woldeyes shares dishes and recipes from her home country through these easy, flavorful meal kits.

  • Ethiopian simmer sauce, also called Kulet, serves as the base for lentil- and protein-packed stews. Eleni includes two:
    • The Mild version is packed with onions, tomato puree, olive oil, red chili peppers, garlic, and more.
    • The Turmeric flavor features turmeric, garlic, ginger, onions, olive oil, and more.
  • A bag each of Red Split Pea Lentils and Yellow Split Peas offers plant-based protein for your stew.
  • To make, simply mix one jar of sauce with lentils or other protein, then simmer until cooked through. Instructions included.
  • Made in Oregon.

    Busy mom of two Eleni Woldeyes loved cooking the dishes she grew up eating in Ethiopia, but making simmer sauces from scratch was time-consuming. As an accountant living in Oregon, she was unable to find the flavorful, aromatic stew bases at local grocers. With convenience in mind, Eleni set out to bring authentic, all-natural Ethiopian sauces to people everywhere. Today, she’s expanded from the farmers' market to store shelves across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

    Needed several replacements; wonderful customer service!

    It took multiple tries to get this to arrive (mostly) intact. I gave up after the 3rd try. The bags of peas all arrived opened along the bottom seal, with yellow and red split peas strewn throughout the packaging. The items appear to be packed thoughtfully, as evidenced by the fact that the glass jars arrived intact, so I assume it must have been a production issue with the sealing of the bags. Uncommon Goods really showed off their amazing customer service here by being fairly easy to reach and quickly sending out replacements. Even if this had been my first purchase from UG, I would feel safe recommending the company to anyone based on how responsive they were to this situation.

    A very healthy, quick, and delicious meal

    First of all, their Customer Service was great. I had a small issue with my order, and they immediately rectified it. I tried the Mild Kulet Sauce, which is low in sodium and carbs (a big plus with me), and all I had to do was put the sauce, some water, and the provided lentils into a saucepan for 30 minutes. The jar said I could have added protein or vegetables. It was delicious! My husband likes things spicier than I do, so he used some of the provided spice powder. I just added a little sour cream. I can see this being a staple on my pantry shelves. One of my favorite Uncommon Goods purchases ever!

    A wonderful plant-based meal

    I made the mild sauce with red lentils last night. It was so easy to fix and tasted wonderful! This could be my favorite go-to meal for busy nights. My husband added the included red Berbere powder to make his spicier; I liked it without. Customer service from this vendor was exceptional. I will definitely order again.
