What Makes It Uncommon

Jewelry maker Tawny Reynolds takes an unconventional and eco-friendly approach to crafting her elegant, minimalist earrings. Using a three-foot magnifying glass, she focuses sunshine on recycled bottles and stained glass. Once they’re melted into droplets, she wraps the tips in recycled silver, creating a simple but impactful pair of earrings.

Tawny Reynolds originally had her sights set on a career in science, not art, but learned that the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. After developing skills in scientific illustration and sculpting (and earning a master's in paleontology), plans changed and she pivoted to making jewelry. Inspired by a childhood friend’s magnifying-glass experiments, Tawny developed an eco-friendly process for creating melted-glass droplet earrings in her San Francisco Bay–area home studio.
