Thousands of years ago, people in modern-day Mexico's Tehuacán Valley began crafting molcajetes and tejolotes, mortar and pestle sets carved from volcanic rock. Corn as we know it was still a new thing then—that's how many thousands of years we're talking—but little about the stone tools has since changed. Find out why they're so well-loved with the aid of this authentic gourmet gift set.

Made from the same stuff as its ancient counterparts, the molcajete is oven-safe (mmm, queso fundido) and ideal for hand-smashing components of spicy salsas or chunky guacamole. Just season it first, like a cast iron skillet. Also included: A hand-woven straw basket called a tortillero, traditionally used to keep tortillas warm before serving. Taco Tuesday, here we come. Handmade in Mexico.

Appetizer for a Special Occasion

We prepared the molcajete and made our first batch of guacamole right away. We made a second batch a week later but the bowl needed more seasoning first as it seemed dry. We plan to make a big batch for the Super Bowl and have another couple in to share it. We will continue to reseason it and feel sure it will continue to improve.

This is a fun addition to our kitchen utensils!

I purchased this item for our family, as we make guacamole at least once a week. We have used the mortar and pestle at least four times since we opened it about a week ago. It is the perfect size for one avocado and we add green salsa and lime to the mix. We have loved the product, but I did notice yesterday after use, some of the "stone" chipped off of the pestle, exposing a white surface underneath. I'm unsure what happened as we wash these items by hand and aren't rough with it. At any rate, I am still pleased with the purchase as it is really easy to use, and makes the mashing of the avocado much easier.
