Maker Elena Barrett's father went on a business trip when she was 5 years old. Knowing bedtime wouldn't be the same without him, Elena's dad left a little note under her pillow wishing her sweet dreams, and something more. On the back of the message was the word huggy, meant to represent his embrace whenever she needed one. This moment meant the world to Elena and inspired her to develop the Hug in a Box. With a sentimental message and space for your own loving words, the adorable package holds a solid pewter token to symbolize your tender touch when you can't be there to hold a loved one close. In 2017, while other kids were selling lemonade or cookies door-to-door, a then-11-year-old Elena Barrett was founding her company. The preteen entrepreneur was born in Russia, adopted at the age of 4, and has lived in New York State ever since. In the past three years, Elena has sold thousands of her virtual hugs while attending high school, playing soccer, and obtaining a pilot's license. "It's such a joy to see all the heartfelt messages my customers have sent to loved ones," she says.
